Jet hikes fuel surcharge on local flights; others may follow

Flying is set to become more expensive with Jet Airways announcing plans to increase fuel surcharge on its domestic network from Saturday. The airline will be charging Rs 100 more on routes under 1,000 km and Rs 200 on routes over 1,000 km, it said in a communication to travel agents on Wednesday. This would mean that from Saturday a passenger flying between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, for example, will have to pay Rs 100 more, while a Mumbai-New Delhi ticket will cost Rs 200 more.
“We are increasing our fuel surcharge levels on all domestic Jet Airways, Jet Airways Konnect and Jet Lite flights for sales effective February 26, 2011,” said Vice-President, Passenger Sales for India, Ms Sonu Kriplani, in a note sent to the agents.
Though other domestic airlines did not reply to queries, indications are that they will follow suit. Jet, Kingfisher Airline and Air India had revised fuel surcharges in the similar range in the first week of January. Indian oil marketing companies have been increasing aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices on the back of rising international crude oil prices. The Jet increase comes after the latest 4 per cent hike in the ATF prices on February 16. Since January 1, when the airlines increased fuel surcharge, the ATF prices have gone up by 11 per cent.
Jet fuel prices hiked by 3.6%
Oil PSUs has also hiked jet fuel prices by a huge 3.6 per cent to Rs 46,876.58 per kl in the midst of rising petrol prices. This time hike in jet fules marks the fifth straight increase in rates since October when international crude oil prices started climbing. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) rates in Delhi have been raised by Rs 1,636.58 per kilolitre, or 3.6 per cent, with effect from 17th December, an official of Indian Oil Corp (IOC) said. The latest hike caused due to the 1.4 per cent raise on December 1 and a massive 5.5 per cent increase effected on November 16, in sync with the rise in global rates.

NEW DELHI: State-owned oil firms today hiked jet fuel prices by 1.4 per cent, the fourth increase in rates in two months. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) rates in Delhi have been hiked by Rs 636.46 per kilolitre, or 1.4 per cent, to Rs 45,240 per kl with effect from midnight tonight, an official of Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation's largest fuel retailer, said.
The latest hike comes on the back of a massive 5.5 per cent increase in ATF prices effected on November 16, in sync with the rise in global rates.
With this hike, IOC and sister public sector retailers Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have raised prices of jet fuel, or ATF, on four occasions since October. The ATF price in Delhi on October 1 was Rs 40,728.52 per kl. The rates were increased by over 11 per cent in four hikes since then, in tandem with a surge in global oil prices past the USD 80 per barrel mark.
Jet fuel, will cost Rs 45,379.62 per kl in Mumbai, home to the nation's busiest airport, from tomorrow, as against Rs 44,716.65 per kl currently. No comment could be immediately obtained from airline companies on the impact of the latest price increase. The three state-owned oil retailers revise jet fuel prices on the 1st and 16th of every month, based on the average international price in the preceding fortnight.
In Kolkata, the ATF price has been hiked by Rs 649 to Rs 52,452.14 per kl, while in Chennai, it will cost Rs 48,496.70 per kl as against Rs 47,812.51 per kl currently. Courtesy: ET

NEW DELHI: State-owned oil firms on Tuesday cut jet fuel, or ATF, prices by 4 per cent, the first reduction in rates since July, on softening of international oil prices.
Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) rates in Delhi will come down by Rs 1,715 per kilolitre (kl), or 4.09 per cent, to Rs 40,138 per kl from midnight tonight, said an official of Indian Oil Corp, the nation's largest fuel retailer.
The rates for Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, the other dominant jet fuel retailers, will see a similar price hike, as the three state-run firms fix prices in tandem.
The reduction follows two successive rise in prices on August 1 and 16.
In Mumbai, the price of ATF were reduced by Rs 1,800, or 4.16 per cent, to Rs 41,388 per kl.
IOC, BPCL and HPCL revise jet fuel prices on the first and the 16th of every month, based on the average global oil price in the previous fortnight. Today's price cut is only the third this fiscal, the previous reductions being on June 1 and July 16.
ATF rates have gone up on 10 occasions since March. Jet fuel in Delhi was priced at Rs 37,982.22 per kl in the second half of February before international oil rates started firming up, resulting in an increase in domestic rates.
Today's cut in fuel rates will reduce the burden on Indian air carriers, but no comments could immediately be obtained from airlines about the impact on passenger fares.
The ATF price in Kolkata was reduced by Rs 1,799 to Rs 48,462 per kl, while in Chennai, it came down from Rs 46,255 to Rs 44,397 per kl.

NEW DELHI: State-owned oil firms on Saturday raised jet fuel, or ATF, prices by 2.7 per cent after lowering the rates at the last fortnightly revision on July 16. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) rates in Delhi will go up by Rs 1,078 per kilolitre (kl), or 2.7 per cent, to Rs 41,177 per kl from midnight tonight, said an official of the Indian Oil Corporation, the nation's largest fuel retailer.
The increase follows a 3.3 per cent, or Rs 1,390 per kl, hike in prices that oil firms had announced on July 16. Including today's hike, ATF rates, which make up for roughly 40 per cent of the operating cost of an airline, have been cranked up on nine occasions since March. However, exceptions were made on two occasions, June 1 and on July 16, when the rates were cut. Jet fuel in Delhi was priced at Rs 37,982.22 per kl in the second half of February before international oil rates started firming up resulting in increase in domestic rates.

IOC, BPCL log 39% jump in ATF sales
JET fuel sellers such as Bharat Petroleum and IndianOil are into big business these days. Their sales of aviation turbine fuel have grown over 39 per cent thanks to rise growth in air traffic. Domestic airlines carried 211.38 lakh passengers from January to May as compared with 170.66 lakh in the year-ago period, registering a 22 per cent surge in passenger traffic.
BPCL sold 88,711 kilolitre (kl) of ATF during March-May, 39 per cent more than 63,746 kl sold in the same period previous year. Similarly, IOC recorded an 8 per cent hike in ATF sales in the past three months. It sold 325,000 kl to 330,000 kl of ATF in the past three months as compared with 305,000 kl in the year-ago period.
However, for Hindustan Petroleum ATF sales came down to 58,000 kl in May from 62,000 kl in the previous month. "We have seen a negative trend in our ATF sales because we lost an international client," said HPCL marketing director S Roy Choudhury. The company couldn't bag the Emirates account this year.
HPCL did not divulge its exact ATF sales in the past three months and a year ago period even after repeated phone calls made by Financial Chronicle.
Petroleum companies have reported higher sales notwithstanding a rise in the ATF price. On June 15, IOC hiked ATF prices by 1.7 per cent i.e. Rs 688 to Rs 40,192 per kl in Delhi. On June 1, oil companies had cut ATF prices by 7 per cent to Rs 39,504 a kl.
Aviation industry experts believe ATF consumption will go up further as airlines are getting back to routes and frequency expansion.
In the ATF market, IOC is the largest oil marketing company with over 60 per cent market share, while BPCL holds 21 per cent and HPCL 16 per cent.
